Anatomy of Earnings Mobility in Britain: Evidence from the BHPS, 1991-1995
نویسنده
چکیده
Using the first five waves of the British Household Panel Survey (1991-5) I analyse male earnings mobility within and between population subgroups defined by age, education and employment status. I find that mobility occurs mainly within those groups. There is evidence of greater mobility amongst the young, part-time workers and the self-employed. However, mobility is lower for more highly educated individuals. Job mobility does not only lead to improving the relative earnings position of individuals but also to downward transitions. Observed earnings movement are not solely due to transitory changes in earnings but there is also ‘permanent’ earnings differences. Earnings Inequality and Earnings Mobility in Great Britain: Evidence from the BHPS, 1991-94
This paper draws on the first four waves of data of the British Household Panel Survey (BHPS) to analyse the statics and dynamics of the earnings distribution in the early nineties. Motivated by the wide range of concerns which mobility is viewed to serve, I analyse mobility under three complementary headings: (i) predictability or state dependence; (ii) movement; and (iii) welfare implications...
متن کاملIntergenerational Mobility in Britain
This paper provides the first full account of intergenerational mobility in Britain using the British Household Panel Survey (BHPS) for the period 1991-1999. The estimates obtained from a sample of all adults who provide information on their parents’ occupation when they were aged 14 point to an intergenerational elasticity – measured in terms of Hope-Goldthorpe scores of occupational prestige ...
متن کاملThe Covariance Structure of Earnings in Great Britain: 1991-1999
In this paper I analyse the dynamic structure of earnings in Great Britain for the period 1991-1999 by decomposing the earnings covariance structure into its permanent and transitory components. Using information on monthly earnings of male full-time employees from the first nine waves of the British Household Panel Study I find that earnings inequality increases over the Nineties. However, ear...
متن کاملA comparison of earnings measures from longitudinal and cross-sectional surveys: evidence from the UK
This paper compares earnings data from the BHPS with those collected in the FRS, contrasting two different points in time (1995/96 and 2003/04), allowing us to assess the possible extent of differential attrition in the BHPS data. We perform non-parametric tests of equality at the centre of the distributions and over the whole earnings distributions. We then apply multivariate regression method...
